Written in September–October 1924, when Rabindranath Tagore was 63, ‘Akash Bhora Surjo Tara’ appeared in Bharti and belongs to Parjaay: Prakriti (Nature), Upa-parjaay: Sadharan. Set in Dadra taal with a mixed Keeda raag, the song’s notation, prepared by Anadikumar Dastidar, was preserved through Santiniketan Patrika and Swarabitan Vol. 30, ensuring its musical accuracy for future generations.
The song marks a major shift from Tagore’s earlier existential reflections. Instead of confronting death, it embraces an expansive affirmation of life, using nature not as backdrop but as a medium of self-realisation. Critic Sankho Ghosh notes that this song embodies a “resistance of fulfilment”, a spiritual openness rooted in natural consciousness rather than scripture or ritual.
Brainware University’s presentation aims to introduce this enduring Rabindrasangeet tradition to audiences across India and the global Bengali diaspora. The performance by Phalguni Mookhopadhayay, Chancellor of Brainware University, reflects his long-standing engagement with music, photography, and the arts. As editor and guide of the Celebrating Tagore project, he has already recorded 78 Tagore songs, contributing significantly to preserving and sharing this heritage. Through this initiative, Brainware University reaffirms its commitment to showcasing Tagore’s timeless, universal voice.
